Mengapa Orang Suka Nonton Film Sedih?

Mungkin Anda penasaran mengapa hampir semua orang suka menonton film-film sedih, tak peduli rasanya menyayat-nyayat atau mungkin Anda akan dibilang cengeng karenanya.

Sebagai seorang mahasiswa di Korea Selatan, Dohyun Ahn seringkali memanfaatkan waktu senggangnya untuk menonton film-film sedih seperti Elvira Madigan. Namun meskipun film itu membuatnya sedih, Ahn berencana menontonnya lagi dan lagi.

“Filmnya begitu menyedihkan, namun dalam waktu yang bersamaan begitu menyenangkan,” kata Ahn dan memutuskan untuk mempelajari ‘paradoks kenikmatan dari sebuah film sedih’.

Untuk mencari tahu apa yang membuat film sedih bisa begitu menarik bagi penonton, Ahn yang juga seorang peneliti senior di departemen ilmu interaksi di Sungkyunkwan University, Korsel meminta 165 mahasiswa AS untuk menonton film berjudul Angel Baby, kisah cinta antara dua orang penderita schizofrenia, Harry dan Kate. Ketika hubungan keduanya berlanjut, Kate hamil namun meninggal dunia saat melahirkan, meninggalkan Harry sendirian bersama anak mereka.

Setelah menonton film tersebut, peneliti menanyai partisipan yang sebagian besar wanita tentang bagaimana perasaannya dan secara spesifik menanyai apakah kisah Harry atau Kate yang membuat partisipan menangis.

Lalu Ahn menemukan bahwa kesedihan itu memprediksi bagaimana partisipan merasakan realitanya dan menonton film sedih itu mengubah pandangan partisipan tentang dunia. Terlepas dari itu, ternyata partisipan memang seringkali menggunakan film sedih untuk membantunya memahami dunia.

“Di permukaan, hal itu seakan berlawanan dengan intuisi. Akal sehat mendikte orang untuk merasakan kesedihan karena kisah sedih itu tampaknya nyata. Meski begitu, orang merasakan realitanya karena mereka merasa sedih,” terang Ahn yang baru saja mempublikasikan studinya ini dalam Journal of Media Psychology: Theories, Methods and Applications.

Emosi seperti kesedihan membantu orang untuk mengumpulkan informasi dan memprosesnya. Ketika menonton film sedih, orang-orang akan mengamati detailnya dan melihat film itu terasa lebih realistis. Film semacam ini juga mengubah caranya menerima dunia, tambah Ahn.

Namun menggunakan film sedih sebagai wahana untuk memahami dunia sepertinya menarik bagi Ahn karena sebagian besar tragedi selalu terfokus pada cinta dan kelembutan dibandingkan karena dendam atau dengki.

“Secara garis besar, kenikmatan menonton film sedih itu bisa diklasifikasikan menjadi dua tipe. Yang satu terfokus pada diri kita sendiri dan satu lagi terfokus pada orang lain. Menikmati film sedih itu sama halnya dengan menikmati kisah yang terfokus pada orang lain karena didorong oleh motivasi altruistik,” ujar Ahn seperti dilansir dari MSNBC. Setelah menonton sebuah film sedih, orang-orang pun cenderung lebih berempati dan pengertian terhadap orang lain.

Selain itu, meski sebagian besar partisipannya adalah wanita, Ahn tak berpikir bahwa hasilnya takkan berbeda bagi pria.

“Meskipun pria dan wanita memiliki tendensi empati yang berbeda namun variasinya takkan terlalu banyak.. Hal ini karena sebagian besar manusia merasakan sejumlah emosi mendasar seperti kesedihan dan empati.”
